Folds of Honor Scholarship

How to Apply for Folds of Honor Scholarship

For the families of fallen or disabled service members and first responders, the pursuit of education should be a path to a brighter future, not a financial burden.

The Folds of Honor Foundation has made it their mission to bridge this gap, providing life-changing scholarships to spouses and children.

However, navigating the application process can feel overwhelming. Many applicants miss out simply because they don’t understand the strict timelines or the specific definition of “unmet need.”

Scholarship Summary

Folds of Honor provides educational scholarships to the spouses and children of America’s fallen and disabled service members and first responders.

Since its inception, the foundation has awarded thousands of scholarships to ensure that no family is left behind on the field of battle or in the classroom.

There are two primary scholarship tracks available:

  1. Higher Education Scholarship: For students seeking a first bachelor’s degree or a certification at a technical/trade school.
  2. Children’s Fund Scholarship: For students in grades K-12 requiring private school tuition or tutoring services.

While many students also search for the Courage to Grow Scholarship as a source of funding, the Folds of Honor program specifically targets families who have sacrificed for their country and communities.

Both awards share a common goal: helping students overcome financial barriers to achieve their academic potential.

Important Note on “Legacy” Status

If you receive a scholarship, you must reapply every year. However, if you maintain your eligibility (such as keeping a 2.0 GPA), Folds of Honor prioritizes returning scholars.

Scholarship Coverage and “Unmet Need”

A common misconception is that this scholarship is a guaranteed $5,000 check. It is vital to understand that Folds of Honor awards are based on “Unmet Need.”

What is Unmet Need?

Folds of Honor defines unmet need as the cost of tuition, fees, required textbooks, and on-campus housing/meal plans minus any other financial aid you receive.

They do not count student loans or work-study as aid.

However, if your tuition is fully covered by the GI Bill or Yellow Ribbon Program, you may not have an “unmet need” for tuition, though you may still qualify for help with books or housing if those aren’t fully covered.

Award Limits

  • Maximum Annual Award: Up to $5,000 per academic year.
  • Per Term Cap: Payments will not exceed $2,500 per term.
  • Part-Time Students: The cap is generally $1,250 per term.

Is the Courage to Grow Scholarship part of this?

While Folds of Honor requires resilience, the specific Courage to Grow Scholarship is a separate entity often cited by students looking for smaller, monthly awards based on GPA and short essays.

How to Apply: A Step-by-Step Guide

The application process is entirely digital. Folds of Honor does not accept paper applications, emailed documents, or faxed forms.

Step 1: Gather Your Documents Early

Do not wait until the portal opens. You will need digital copies (PDF or JPG) of:

  • Member’s service documents (DD214 or Agency Letter).
  • Proof of dependency (Birth Certificate/Marriage License).
  • Most recent school transcript (showing a 2.0+ GPA).
  • A recent photograph of the student (headshot).

Step 2: Create Your Account

Visit the Folds of Honor scholarship portal. You can create one master account for your family, but you must start a separate application for each student (dependent) you are applying for.

Step 3: Submit Before the Deadline

The window is strict. Late submissions are not accepted under any circumstances.

Step 4: The “Check-In” Process

This is where many applicants fail. Being “awarded” the scholarship in July does not mean the money is sent immediately.

You must complete a “Check-In” on the portal in the summer (for Fall payment) and again in December (for Spring payment).

  • Why? You must upload your specific tuition bill to prove your “unmet need” for that semester.
  • Result: If you miss the Check-In, you forfeit the funds for that term.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the funds for off-campus housing?

No. For Higher Education, funds cover on-campus dormitory housing only. Off-campus apartments, even if required by the school, are generally not eligible expenses.

Does the money go to me or the school?

Funds are sent directly to the educational institution (Bursar’s office) or the tutoring center. Money is never sent directly to the student or parent.

What if my GPA drops below 2.0?

You must maintain a 2.0 GPA to remain eligible. If your transcript shows a GPA below 2.0 for the two most recent terms, the offer will be rescinded, and you cannot reapply until you raise your grades.

I am a graduate student. Can I apply?

Yes. Folds of Honor supports postgraduate work, including master’s degrees, doctorates, and second bachelor’s degrees.

Conclusion

Remember to broaden your search. Applying for the Folds of Honor award along with the Courage to Grow Scholarship and other private grants creates a robust financial safety net, ensuring you can focus on what matters most: your education.
